Beach Access Way Upgrade at 17W
A key part of our role at Barwon Coast is the management and maintenance of facilities and infrastructure along the coastline including beach access ways.
Barwon Coast Committee of Management approved the replacement of beach access stairs at 17W East that were removed late in 2021 after becoming twisted and dangerous following strong storm surges in July.
The remaining degraded structure will be removed and replaced with improved beach access stairs and the linked coastal trail will be widened and revegetated to enhance the natural environment and provide easier accessibility to pedestrians and bikes.
The new stairs and improved coastal trail will provide easy beach access for the community and campers from Riverside Family Caravan Park, and also provided alternative access to the beach during Hooded Plover nesting season.
The works will start in July and are expected to be completed before the September school holidays depending on weather conditions.
Barwon Coast would like to thank you for your patience while we replace the structure and keep the public safe. We remind all beach visitors to only use the designated carparks and pathways when accessing the beach to minimise any environmental damage.
Changes to the area will also include the continued closure of the adjacent Horseshoe carpark. Closure of this small carpark will reduce pedestrian conflicts with vehicles ensuring the safety of all coastal trail users.
