Redevelopment of the Surf Beach Complex at Ocean Grove

Project Overview

In June 2019 the redevelopment of the new Surf Beach Complex at Ocean Grove Main Beach was completed. The complex is a valuable community asset that is designed to blend into the natural landscape and provides modern functional facilities for both now and into the future.

The Surf Beach Complex was redeveloped as the original surf complex building was worn out from over 20 years of use by the Ocean Grove Surf Lifesaving Club and visitors to the Dunes restaurant. Surf club membership was booming and the facilities in the old building did not meet the needs of the club into the future. The Dunes Restaurant roof was leaking and required significant funding to fix as well as expensive upgrades to the kitchen were required to meet current commercial kitchen standards.

The redevelopment was a partnership project between Barwon Coast and the Ocean Grove Surf Lifesaving Club. A new vision was required to provide a facility to meet community and club needs for the next 30 years.

The new building is much larger than the old building, more thermally efficient and provides better view lines to the fantastic ocean views. It complies with current disability access requirements and reduces external maintenance by the use of natural timbers and minimal painted surfaces. We believe the new surf beach complex is an incredible resource for the local community and visitors to Ocean Grove Main Beach and we hope everyone enjoys using it into the future.

Barwon Coast ran a tendering process supported by the Office of the Victorian Government Architect for the building design. Acclaimed Architects Wood Marsh designed the new Surf Beach Complex. Various other expert consultants were also involved in creating the new building including project managers Root Partnerships, SA Building Surveyors and quantity surveyors Plancost Australia. Following completion of the design and tendering process in May 2018, Ireland Brown were appointed as builders for the project. The building is now complete and internal fit-outs are occurring before it is fully operational for the surf club and the café. The surf club are continuing to fundraise to complete fitting out the facility.

At the time of the build the café tenancy was due to be re-tendered. Through a rigorous open tender process, Barwon Coast secured a very experienced and capable new tenant for the revamped “The Dunes Cafe”. The Dunes Café is currently completing the fit-out of the commercial kitchen. It is anticipated the cafe will be opened to the public in August 2019.

Barwon Coast allocated $3.0m of our own funds towards replacing the restaurant, public toilets and external landscaping. The Ocean Grove Surf Lifesaving Club secured State, Federal and Council funding for the much needed new surf club facilities, including a new patrol tower. Overall, the total spend for the facility was $9.4m.
