What does it take to manage the coast? Find out how Barwon Coast works alongside Traditional Owners, volunteer groups and the community to find balance between recreation and conservation.
Activity description
Barwon Coast’s purpose is ‘to care for the coast’ – balancing people’s desires to visit and use the beach in different ways, with conserving its environmental values. In this interactive activity, students will learn about some of the environmental, social and economic considerations involved in coastal management, and ways everyone can help care for the coast.
This activity will cover topics such as:
- Wadawurrung connections to Country
- Environmental features – e.g. sand dunes, Great Southern Reef, Marine Sanctuary, threatened species (Hooded Plover)
- Human and natural pressures – e.g. visitation and use, erosion, introduced species, climate change
- Coastal management – Barwon Coast’s role, including working alongside Wadawurrung Traditional Owners and local volunteer groups
- Working in coastal management – the many roles, pathways and opportunities
Location: Ocean Grove Main Beach (preferred) or Barwon Heads on request
Available to: Schools extending to Armstrong Creek and Geelong, and those staying in Barwon Coast’s caravan parks
Available days/times: Monday to Thursday between 9am-4pm.
