About Riverside Camping Area

About this page

The Riverside camping area provides the opportunity for a bit of good old bush camping but right next to the water.

With over 220 sites (all unpowered) located on the Barwon River side of the sand spit between Barwon Heads and Ocean Grove, no site is more than a minutes walk to the river beach or a couple of minutes to the ocean beach. Many of the sites are right on the river’s edge and many are shaded by native vegetation. Spectacular sunsets across the river estuary abound.

To preserve the fragile coastal environment the Riverside camping area is only available for the six weeks of peak summer - from late December to the end of January.

Toilets and laundry facilities are provided within the camping area and food vendors operate from mobile and static vans.

An easy stroll across the bridge brings you to Barwon Heads, the town made famous by the ABC TV series SeaChange, and its cafes and shops. A few minutes in the opposite direction is the Ocean Grove township providing all that a camper requires.

In late December 2009, a draft of a 10 year landscape masterplan was released for feedback from campers and the local community.

The masterplan features:

The replacement of all existing amenity block with 4 new blocks

Creation of a number of day visitor nodes; nomination of an area in the north of the camping ground as a large group camping

A shared trail linking the Riverview Trail with Barwon Heads Bridge; consolidation of vehicle access points and

Enhanced facilities for the new Life Guard patrolled beach at 18W Oceanside.

Feedback on the draft masterplan was sought until the  end of February 2010 and the Committee is currently reviewing those responses.
