About this page

Barwon Coast are the delegated managers of the local Port of Barwon Heads.

In mid 2008 the Safety & Environment Management Plan for the Port was adopted by Barwon Coast following upon the review of public submissions. A copy of the Plan is available at our offices in Barwon Heads or on the following link Port of Barwon Heads Safety & Environment Management Plan

The maintenance of the Port’s navigation aids and the maintenance of the Port infrastructure are the Committee’s two most important responsibilities.

Other important responsibilities of the port manager include management of moorings within the Port and consulting with other agencies relating to Port matters (i.e. DSE, MSV, Parks Victoria, City of Greater Geelong).

The Port has both recreational and commercial activities. Presently a commercial cray fisherman and two fishing charter vessels operate out of the
Port into Bass Strait. Boat, sea kayak tuition and canoe operators also operate within the Port.

A variety a recreational activities occur within the Port. Many recreational vessels (i.e. powerboats, power skis, sailing vessels, canoes, sea-kayaks) use the port.

The Barwon Heads Sailing Association, organises and conducts competitions on the river, north of the Bridge.

The jetties are frequented by recreational fishermen and used for promenading. Swimming and water recreation are other key activities that occur within the Port. Tuition in sea kayak use and training of surf life saving club members occurs.

Barwon Coast uses the SEMP as a management tool to systematically examine the full scope of activities in the port and to ensure that all significant safety and environmental risks are identified and controlled.
