Ocean Grove Sea Wall

About this page

Following upon a review of submissions received from the local community on 3 possible options for the seawall construction , the Committee resolved to select Option 1 - a combination of precast concrete and timber wall panelling with pre cast piles (basically concrete walling below average beach height and timber above).

The 200m long timber Ocean Grove Seawall and Promenade built in the 1960’s protects the Surf Beach complex that houses the Ocean Grove Surf Life Saving Club and the privately operated Cafe.

The seawall is now suffering from the continuous impact of the sea and needs replacing

Barwon Coast, in consultation with the Department of Sustainability & Environment,  resolved to replace the existing seawall in its current location and a grant of $890,000 towards the cost of this 1m+  plus project will be provided by the State Government

Tenders for the project closed early October 2007 and construction is anticipated to commence in May 2008

History

Consulting engineers were engaged to design a new seawall of improved durability being of  approximately the same length, height and width with new beach access stairways including a ramp suitable for needs of persons of all abilities.

The Consulting engineers  reported on 3 possible options for the seawall construction noting that replacement in all timber is not a sustainable option.

The 3 options were:

1.     A combination of precast concrete and timber wall panelling with pre cast piles (basically concrete walling below average beach height and timber above)

2.     Precast concrete piles and panelling

3.     Precast concrete piles, precast concrete panelling with every the upper portion of every 4th panel being timber.

The seawall options report can be viewed at our offices at the Barwon Heads Caravan Park,
