The Barwon Coast Committee of Management Inc (Barwon Coast) was incorporated under Crown Land (Reserves ) Act 1978 effective 1 July 1995, to manage the coastal crown land formerly managed by the Barwon Heads Park Committee and the Ocean Grove Foreshore Reserve Committee. Barwon Coast powers and responsibilities of management are derived from that Act.
Key State Legislation
Crown Land (Reserves) Act 1978 - Provide for the Reservation of Crown Lands for certain purposes and for the Management of such Reserved Lands.
Coastal Management Act 1995 - Amongst a wide range of provisions, the CMA provides for the co-ordinated strategic planning and management for the Victorian coast; for the preparation and implementation of management plans for coastal Crown land; and to provide a co-ordinated approach for approvals for the use and development of coastal Crown land.
Planning and Environment Act 1987 - The Act is establishes a framework for planning the use, development and protection of land in Victoria in the present and long-term interests of all Victorians.
Key State Policies
Victorian Coastal Strategy 2008 - Under the Coastal Management Act 1995 the Victorian Coastal Council has prepared the Victorian Coastal Strategy 2008 (VCS). The VCS establishes the framework for the long term sustainable management of coastal and marine areas in Victoria.
Coast Action Strategy 2004 - 2010 - The Coast Action/Coastcare Strategy offers the support and direction for communities to actively engage in the protection and management of their coast and marine environments.
Coastal Spaces - In August 2004, the Minister for Planning and the Minister for Environment announced a joint project between the Victorian Coastal Council and Department of Sustainability & Environment to help coastal councils protect the character of coastal townships and the open spaces between towns along the coast. Known as the Coastal Spaces Initiative, this project further implements the State Government's overall policies for protecting the coast and managing development in coastal Victoria. Coastal Spaces builds on related plans and programs.
Coastal Spaces aims to:
- Improve and clarify strategic planning for sustainable development in coastal Victoria.
- Improve the application of planning and environment tools in coastal areas and develop new tools as appropriate.
- Build the capacity of local government and others to apply Government policy for the Coast.
